Richardson & Veale has a distinctly unstuffy approach to interior decorative design. We take our inspiration from the English tradition. We believe in layering colour, pattern and textiles and injecting a sense of playfulness into our work.
We want to give new life to your much-loved comfy sofas and make your passed-through-the-generations antiques the heart of your home. We are resolutely uninterested in trends. In the words of Dorothy Draper: ‘If it looks right, it is right’.
Central to our interior design service is layout and room planning. Sometimes even a simple rearrangement of existing furniture can make a room feel entirely new. We will look at your home with fresh eyes, and can provide scaled room drawings so you can clearly visualise how each room will look before a single thing is moved.
Lighting is one of those things that is easy to get wrong and transformative when you get it right. We think carefully about ambient, task and accent lighting: the overhead light, the wall lights and the well-placed lamp in the corner, because it’s these finishing touches that create atmosphere and make a room feel properly lived in and loved. We also design and make bespoke handmade lampshades, because even something as small as the lining can change the entire feel of a room.

A well-chosen piece of art or a beautifully placed accessory is often what makes a room feel complete, and it’s one of our favourite parts of the job. We love helping clients find something new, but we’re just as happy to work with what you already have, because sometimes a collection you’ve lived with for years just needs a fresh pair of eyes and a better wall. We have great relationships with specialist art consultants and antique dealers, and we keep a close eye on the auction houses, always on the lookout for that unexpected find that feels absolutely right.
Our love of fabric was the starting point for Richardson & Veale. We have encyclopaedic knowledge of textiles and pattern and we work with a wide range of brands, including the smaller, independent houses whose designs you’re unlikely to find elsewhere. Whether it’s the perfect plain for your sofa, an ideal small-scale print for an armchair or a statement fabric for your curtains, we will find it. We also know that a seemingly innocuous trim can transform a cushion, and that a single injection of colour can lift an entire room. Above all, we know how to bring all these elements together so that everything gels in the most considered, understated way.
Our reupholstery and bespoke soft furnishings team each bring decades of experience to their craft. Every item is handmade and completely bespoke for your project.
If new furniture is needed, alongside brands who manufacture in the UK, we also work with local makers to design entirely original pieces built specifically for your space.
Choosing paint and wallpaper is one of those things that looks straightforward until you’re faced with seventeen shades of off-white. It should be a joy, and with the right guidance it is. We love colour and will always champion it, but we know equally well when a calm, quiet white is exactly what a room needs. We know that a north-facing room needs careful handling, that a bedroom calls for something restful and that a dining room, more often than not, can take a really bold colour. We also adore the occasional quirky wallpaper.
The legendary interior decorator Robert Kime famously said that a room starts with a rug, and we couldn’t agree more. A rug sets the colour and mood for everything that follows. Some rooms call for something robust enough to withstand muddy dogs and busy family life, while a more formal drawing room might be the perfect home for a beautiful antique Persian rug. From hardwearing natural flooring to rare vintage finds, we will help you find the right solution for every space.
